Owners of the Mengdiexuan Collection

Founded by Betty Lo and Kenneth Chu, the Mengdiexuan Collection of ancient Chinese gold is one of the most comprehensive in the world. Their generous donation of nearly 1,400 gold and silver wares includes objects from the Eurasian Steppes, Tibetan Plateau, and Central Plains. These objects span a period of over three thousand years. Betty and Kenneth have also supported numerous exhibitions and research projects, and helped to bridge the gap between scholarship and craftsmanship by collaborating with partners in the jewellery industry to conduct research on historical designs and techniques.

Raphael Wong is a Bei Shan Tang Scholar with a DPhil in archaeology from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on China, West Asia, and the Eurasian Steppes of the 1st millennium BC. He is lead curator of the exhibitions Bank of China (Hong Kong) Presents: “The Origins of Chinese Civilisation”, “Brilliance: Ming Dynasty Ceramics Treasures from the Palace Museum, 1368–1644”, “Radiance: Ancient Gold from the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection”, “The Making of Masterpieces: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum”, “Clay to Treasure: Ceramics from the Palace Museum Collection”, and other upcoming exhibitions at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
