The Development of Chang Dai-chien's Painting Style: From Traditional Techniques to “Splashed Colours”

16.12.2023
3:00 pm–4:00 pm
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium, Hong Kong Palace Museum

Chang Dai-chien’s painting style is deeply rooted in all aspects of Chinese tradition, and the bold splashed-ink painting style he developed in the later stages of his artistic career made him a master in the history of Chinese painting. This developmental process embraced both traditional Chinese and Western influences, the most important of which was his understanding and interpretation of “abstraction”. In his creations, he pursued the highest realm of Chinese painting, which has existed since ancient times – “forgoing the form and keeping the spirit”. He once observed: “If you give up conventional appearances, that is abstraction”. He expressed the artistic notion of “image of no image, and image within no image” by using a set of self-developed and modern abstract techniques. In particular, through splashed-ink motifs such as clouds and mountains, his paintings illustrate the most magnificent and evocative imagery that captures the vibrancy and vitality of nature.
