This talk will briefly describe the nature of Qing dynasty imperial weddings and explain the various rituals before, during, and after the ceremony, as well as their meanings in Chinese traditional culture. The audience will find out the specific procedures in the imperial wedding rituals, why the emperor must marry his empress at midnight, and how the imperial wedding ceremony differed from that of ordinary people. Through examining the painting The Grand Imperial Wedding of the Guangxu Emperor and images of related artefacts, the audience would be able to travel back in time as if they were attending the grand imperial wedding in person and experiencing first-hand the magnificent ceremony of the emperor.
