Traditional gongbi (fine line) painting is a style of Chinese painting that emphasises neatness and delicacy. The delineation of the objects in the painting must be carefully handled. During the Jin and Tang dynasties, the development of gongbi painting became mature. Artists nowadays have not only inherited the traditional methods of production of gongbi painting, but also developed a variety of subjects, or combined various techniques to create a new perspective.
In this workshop, the production methods and procedures of gongbi painting will be taught through the works of Chen Hongshou (1598–1652), a master of “transformative painting” of the late Ming Dynasty. Participants will learn the basic techniques such as outlining, parting, overdyeing, baking, and ink breaking to complete a fresh gongbi painting on a round fan.
