What are enamels? How did the technique of painted enamel, which originated from the West, appeared in China during the Kangxi period (1662–1722)? How did two painted enamel production centres, one in the Imperial Workshops of Beijing and the other in Guangzhou (Canton), emerge? What kind of interactions took place between Beijing and Guangzhou? What were the differences and similarities between the enamels produced in the two centres? What kind of influence European enamels had on enamels made in Beijing and Guangzhou? Utilising painted enamels on metal core from the Qing imperial collection, this talk introduces the characteristics of painted enamels of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), as well as the interactions between China and Europe and between court and regional productions, which are demonstrated by these painted enamels.
