HKPM Special Exhibition Talk Series: The Steppe Styles of Elite in Early China –Beginning with the Ancient Gold from the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection

The steppe and the Central Plains have long been regarded as areas with different cultures. However, recent archaeological excavations and research prompt a re-examination of the cultures of the late Eastern Zhou (770–256 BCE), Qin (221–207 BCE), and early Han (206 BCE–220 CE) elite, which show significant influences from steppe cultures. Centring on the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection, this talk draws on new archaeological finds and discusses the steppe styles of the elite in early China as represented by their costumes, vehicles, and palaces.

This talk accompanies the special exhibition “Radiance: Ancient Gold from the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection” in Gallery 9 at the Museum. As the biggest exhibition in Hong Kong in recent years that highlights the artistic and technical achievements of gold in ancient China, it showcases more than 200 sets of gold objects, with the oldest dating back to the 18th century BCE. Many of them are shown to the public for the first time.
