Hong Kong is rich in archaeological resources, with sites spreading wide across the territory and spanning from the prehistoric period to the 20th century. The Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) of Development Bureau is dedicated to the conservation and promotion of Hong Kong’s cultural heritage. This talk will introduce the archaeological work in Hong Kong, measures to preserve and conserve sites of archaeological significance, and the archaeological work of AMO.
This talk accompanies the Special Exhibition “Gazing at Sanxingdui: New Archaeological Discoveries in Sichuan” in Gallery 8, on view from 27 September through 8 January 2024 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. The exhibition features 120 remarkable bronze, jade, gold, and pottery objects dating to 2,600–4,500 years ago. Nearly half of these were unearthed in the most recent excavations at Sanxingdui site from 2020 to 2022, and many are exhibited outside Sichuan for the first time. This exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the Sanxingdui Museum in Guanghan, and the Jinsha Site Museum in Chengdu, and with the support of the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. Bank of China (Hong Kong) is the Sole Sponsor of this special exhibition.
