From the late 18th to the early 20th century, French society underwent major changes and French fashion evolved according to the times, from extravagant court dresses to glamorous evening gowns for women, and from richly embroidered habit à la française to handsome three-piece suits for men. The Special Exhibition "The Adorned Body" features nearly 400 stunning pieces of French costumes, jewellery and accessories from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. These remarkable pieces demonstrate the transformative power of clothing and adornment, shaping the body and defining social status.
Two curators from the Musée des Art Décoratifs, Paris, Dr Denis Bruna and Mathieu Rousset-Perrier, will provide insights into the concept and content of the exhibition. The Associate Curator of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, Dr Ingrid Yeung, will join them in a conversation about how the exhibition presents the history of French fashion, jewellery and accessories.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition “The Adorned Body: French Fashion and Jewellery 1770–1910 from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris” on view in Gallery 9 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from 26 June to 14 October 2024. The exhibition is jointly organised by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Cathay is the Travel Partner of the exhibition.
