In this talk, Dr Shengyu Wang uses a contextual archaeological approach to examine the unprecedented use of gold in high-ranking Han tombs, including gold thread on Han jade burial suits, miniature horse hooves, and gilded incense burners. Drawing on the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection, this talk explores how gold, together with other materials such as jade and stone, became integral to the Han dynasty’s cosmology and ideology of life and the afterlife. These gold artefacts were not only the result of advances in mining raw materials and processing techniques, but also related to changes in burial practices and the pursuit of and belief in immortality.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition “Radiance: Ancient Gold from the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection” in Gallery 9, on view from 22 February through 25 September 2023 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. As the biggest exhibition in Hong Kong in recent years that highlights the artistic and technical achievements of gold in ancient China, it showcases more than 200 sets of gold objects, with the oldest dating back to the 18th century BCE. Many of them are shown to the public for the first time.
