The Shijiahe site (about 6,000–4,000 BP) in Tianmen city, Hubei province, is the largest and best-preserved Neolithic settlement in the middle course of the Yangtze River. This site provides insights into key factors that influenced the development of civilisations, including climate and agriculture. It also allows us to explore the mindsets and lifestyles of the people during that time – such as brewing, sacrifices, early religion, jade-making from the peak of prehistoric China and so on. Another ancient culture often compared to Shijiahe is the Sanxingdui culture (about 3,800–2,900 BP), located near Chengdu city, Sichuan province, along the upper course of the Yangtze River. The jade figures from Shijiahe are regarded as possible precursors to the bronze busts and masks of Sanxingdui, denoting a cultural lineage along the Yangtze River.
