Fascinating the world with its striking realism and versatility, Flemish portraiture brilliantly captures not just the likeness but also the character and background of the sitter. Flemish portrait painting began in the early fifteenth century and reached its pinnacle in the seventeenth century, when it stood out as a prestigious and codified genre.
Join Dr Anna Yee Ngan Kwong to explore its development through Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), a leader of the Antwerp school who operated a highly sophisticated workshop with over a hundred collaborators and assistants. This talk offers a close look at the stylistic traits that set him apart as one of the greatest masters of Flemish portraiture.
This talk accompanies the exhibition “Odysseys of Art: Masterpieces Collected by the Princes of Liechtenstein” in Gallery 8. The exhibition showcases 124 representative masterpieces, including a large quantity of paintings by the distinguished 17th-century artist Peter Paul Rubens, making it by far the largest assemblage of his works ever to be displayed in Hong Kong. This exhibition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Liechtenstein Princely Collections with LGT Private Banking as Principal Sponsor.
