Gold has been manufactured and used for thousands of years in China. It is admired for its good ductility, resistance to rust, and dazzling colour. Why, though, are some ancient gold objects marked with rust spots, blackened, or discoloured? In this talk, Jessie Liang, Conservator of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, explores ancient gold craftsmanship and deterioration mechanisms using the conservation of ancient gold objects in the Hong Kong Palace Museum as an example. She will also share insights into the conservation technologies and principles for gold objects in the museum setting.
This talk accompanies the special exhibition “Radiance: Ancient Gold from the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection” in Gallery 9, on view from 22 February through 25 September 2023 at the Museum. As the largest exhibition in Hong Kong in recent years that highlights the artistic and technical achievements of gold in ancient China, it presents more than 200 sets of gold objects, with the oldest dating back to the 18th century BCE. Many of them are shown to the public for the first time.
