Art collecting played and continues to play a significant role in the making of masterpieces, the subject of a new exhibition at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
Dr Fangting Jiang’s talk traces the transmission history of the only extant landscape painting associated with Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song dynasty. Her research examines how the activities of connoisseur-collectors in the Ming dynasty influenced the elevation of artworks to the status of masterpieces.
Dr Raphael Wong visualises the contributions of the Hong Kong Acquisition Team to the formation of the Palace Museum’s world-class collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy during the early years of the People’s Republic of China. He also explores the symbiotic relationship between people, institutions, and masterpieces of art.
This talk accompanies the opening exhibition “The Making of Masterpieces: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum“ in Gallery 8 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
