HKPM Opening Exhibition Talk Series: Portraits of Qing Emperors and Empresses — Stories of Curation and Conservation

24.09.2022
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium

Session 1 — Imperial Portraits and Qing Court Rites: A Curatorial Conversation

Ancestor portraits of Qing emperors and empresses are not only exquisite works of art, but also paraphernalia of courts rituals. Foregrounding this special type of portraiture, the Hong Kong Palace Museum’s opening exhibition “Encountering the Majestic: Portraits of Qing Emperors and Empresses” decodes and deciphers these paintings and sketches from multiple perspectives. It reveals why, when, and how they were commissioned, their evolution through the Qing dynasty, the meanings and symbolism they embody, and their function in ancestral rites. Associate Curator Dr Xu Yang and Assistant Curator Li An Tan of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the exhibition’s co-curators, will present the research conducted in preparation for the exhibition as well as behind-the-scenes stories.

Session 2 — Restoring Sketches of Empresses: A Conservator’s Perspective

Chinese painting and calligraphy conservation has over one thousand years of history. The condition of a time-honoured work can be much compromised, which makes it difficult for viewers to appreciate its original brilliance and the achievement of the artist. It is through conservation work that they could regain their splendour. Mr. Zhichao Lyu, Conservator of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, will reveal the process of treating two sketches portraying the empresses, which are featured in the Museum’s opening exhibition “Encountering the Majestic: Portraits of Qing Emperors and Empresses”. His talk will be followed by a demonstration of the tools and materials used in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy conservation.

This talk accompanies the opening exhibition “Encountering the Majestic: Portraits of Qing Emperors and Empresses” in Gallery 4 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
