Archaeological finds continue to shed new light on the development of horse art and culture in early China. While artisans sought inspiration in the physical and spiritual characteristics of horses, state officials developed systems to manage, raise, and distribute horses in military and diplomatic settings.
This talk explores the development of Chinese horse art and culture in early China through textual and material evidence from the late Shang (about 1250–1046 BCE) to Han (206 BCE–220 CE) dynasties, which suggests that internal and external forces combined to shape the formation of horse art, ritual, and administrative systems in China.
This talk accompanies the opening exhibition “Grand Gallop: Art and Culture of the Horse” in Gallery 9 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
