Chen Hongshou (1598–1652) was a pioneer of transformative painting in the late Ming dynasty. He boldly developed a style of figure painting that revered antiquity while embracing the eccentric and fantastical.
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to explore the peculiar world of Chen by replicating his painting Drunk Yang Shen with Flowers on His Head, featured in “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Stories Untold — Figure Paintings of the Ming Dynasty from the Palace Museum” exhibition. With the guidance of the instructor, you will paint old trees, strange rocks, and bizarre figures, immersing yourself in the emotions of a vibrant group of late Ming literati.
