Hong Kong Palace Museum Announces New Exhibitions for its Second Year

25.07.2023

Updated ticketing arrangements come into effect from late September 2023

As it enters the second year of operations, the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) announced that it will refresh its existing thematic exhibitions and present a range of new special exhibitions. Highlights of the upcoming special exhibitions include “Gazing at Sanxingdui: New Archaeological Discoveries in Sichuan" (“Gazing at Sanxingdui”) and a special exhibition co-organised with the National Gallery, London, both scheduled to open later this year. In addition, HKPM announced adjustments to its general admission ticket price which will come into effect from 27 September 2023, as well as the ticket price for the “Gazing at Sanxingdui” special exhibition.

Collaborating with world-renowned cultural institutions to curate high-quality exhibitions in support of Hong Kong’s development into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange

During its first year of opening, the HKPM presented 12 large-scale exhibitions displaying by rotation some of the priceless treasures from the Palace Museum and showcasing the historical, cultural, and artistically valuable artifacts of renowned museums and other cultural institutions from around the world alongside the Palace Museum treasures. These unique exhibitions highlighted the importance of cultural and knowledge exchange between China and other countries.

The Museum will progressively refresh its thematic exhibitions in Galleries 4, 6 and 7. New highlights include a new exhibition on Ancient Paintings co-organised with the Palace Museum; a new exhibition showcasing some of the best from the HKPM’s own collections; and a new multimedia art exhibition by Hong Kong artists that explores ancient Chinese garden art. These new exhibitions will reflect the profound and far-reaching influence of traditional Chinese culture and art from multiple perspectives. For special exhibitions, highlights will be the three-and-a-half-month-long “Gazing at Sanxingdui” in Gallery 8 from 27 September, displaying the latest discoveries unearthed from the Sanxingdui archaeological site, and the four-and-a-half-month-long special exhibition co-organised with the National Gallery, London, scheduled to open in November in Gallery 9.

Adjusting admission prices to maintain operational sustainability

Like other arts and cultural facilities in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), the HKPM operates on a self-financing basis. Apart from the partial funding from the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, HKPM relies heavily on admission income, corporate sponsorship, venue rental, annual membership fees etc to maintain its high-quality exhibitions/programmes and fund its expenses. To maintain the Museum's operational sustainability and ensure it can continue to present high-quality exhibitions and programmes to the public, the HKPM will adjust its admission prices from 27 September 2023 (Wednesday). General admission tickets for adults (with access to Gallery 1 to 7) will be priced at HKD60 (up from HKD50), while half-price concessions tickets** will be priced at HKD30. For special exhibition, admission to the “Gazing at Sanxingdui” special exhibition (Gallery 8) will be priced at HKD150# with half-price concessions at HKD75, both offering complimentary access to the exhibitions in Gallery 1 to 7. Details of the admission prices for other upcoming special exhibitions will be announced in due course.

Dr Louis Ng, Museum Director of the HKPM, said, “As the HKPM enters its second year of operation, our focus will be on collaborating with leading global cultural institutions to curate the finest high-quality exhibitions, promote the inheritance of Chinese culture and cultural exchanges between China and the world. In reviewing and setting ticket prices, the Museum takes into account the substantial expenditure involved in preparing for key exhibitions in the coming year, which include loan fees, insurance, transportation, installation and maintenance costs. It is also important that we strike the right balance between maintaining the operational sustainability of the Museum and ensuring affordability for members of the public and tourists. In achieving our mission to promote the best of Chinese culture, the HKPM will continue to take into account the needs of different sectors of the community.”

The price for each of the four membership categories of the "HKPM Friends” Membership Programme remains unchanged, with individual membership at HKD600, dual at HKD1,000, youth and senior at HKD300, and family membership at HKD1,200 (including two adults and one child aged 7-11 or a full-time student). “HKPM Friends” have unlimited access to the Museum's thematic exhibitions (Gallery 1 to 7) throughout the year and will receive admission codes for access to special exhibitions. They are also entitled to priority booking of selected events and programmes, as well as exciting privileges such as a 10% discount at the Museum’s gift shop and restaurants. (Discounts are subject to relevant terms and conditions; please refer to the HKPM website for more details).

In the coming year, HKPM will continue to seek sponsorship to support the distribution of no less than 120,000 admission tickets to underprivileged groups, joining hands with corporates, social welfare organisations and district groups to arrange visits for the disadvantaged communities and students to HKPM. Under the programme, the HKPM has welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from the underprivileged background and over 70,000 people from the education sector in the first year of opening, including students, teachers and school principals.

Starting from 1 August 2023, visitors can purchase tickets for the month of September through the HKPM website, the WKCD website, the WKCD mobile app, and online ticketing platform Cityline. Tickets can also be purchased through the online platforms of the Museum’s ticketing partners, namely China Travel Service (Hong Kong) Limited, Fliggy, KKday, Klook and Trip.com.

Furthermore, the current special exhibition, "Cartier and Women" in Gallery 8, will close on 14 August 2023. Those who haven’t seen this fascinating display of Cartier treasures should seize the final opportunity to buy tickets.

#After the closure of “Radiance: Ancient Gold from the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection and the Mengdiexuan Collection” special exhibition on 25 September 2023, Gallery 9 will be temporarily closed in preparation for a new special exhibition, which will be launched in November 2023.

**Concession arrangement applies to children (aged 7 to 11), full-time students, seniors (age 60 and above), persons with disabilities (with one companion), and CSSA recipients.
